RED CLAY TILE WORKS, operated by Anders and Eileen Anderson, is a studio devoted exclusively to designing and producing hand made tiles. We have designed and built many of our own specialized tools for the purpose. Tiles are sold individually, assembled into decorative panels, mirrors and furniture, or made for permanent architectural installation on a custom basis working closely with the needs of our customers. An original tile design is first modeled in clay. A plaster negative mold is then made in order to press the working tiles. Each mold takes many hours to make and sometimes several casting steps depending on the complexity of the design and the intended glazing technique. Often in architectural applications, the pressed tile is further modified through direct modeling to achieve the intended effect. Some tile shapes are made by extrusion and some by forming a flat slab of clay.
